1. Âm và chữ O o - Sound & letter O o

♦ Phát âm o [ͻ] – Pronouncing o [ͻ]

“O” is a low back and rounded vowel, which is produced in a deeper position than “ô”. The lips are moving forwards and rounded, and the mouth is open wider than in production of “ô”: mò, gõ, phó.

♦ Chính tả - Spelling

O can be placed in three positions: the nuclear vowel (cho, tròn), the labialization (loan, toàn) and final semi-vowel (lao xao, hào).

2. Âm và chữ Ô ô - Sound & letter Ô ô

♦ Phát âm ô [o] - Pronouncing ô [o]

“Ô” is a mid back and rounded vowel. The blade of the tongue is moving backwards, and the tip of the tongue is in a very low position. The lips are moving forwards and rounded, and the mouth is open wider than in producing [u]: khô, tổ, phố.

3. Âm và chữ U u - Sound & letter U u

♦ Phát âm U [u] - Pronouncing U [u]

U is a high back and rounded vowel. When pronouncing, the tongue tip is in a low position and away from the lower front teeth. The lips are sharply rounded (tu, thu, hú). This vowel is almost like the English vowel /u:/ as in boot, move, shoe.

4. Âm và chữ Ư ư - Sound & letter Ư ư

♦ Phát âm Ư [ɯ] - Pronouncing Ư [ɯ]

“Ư” is a high central and unrounded vowel. The tongue blade is moving a little backwards and tense, the back of the tongue is rising towards the velum. In the central position of the tongue, “ư” is the least open vowel, "a" is the most open vowel, and "ơ" is the half-open (or half-close) vowel.
