BÀI 20. NGỮ ĐIỆU TIẾNG VIỆT
Vietnamese intonation
Ngữ điệu - Intonation
Intonation is the coordination of sounds between syllables in a sentence. In Vietnamese, pitch differences are the main component in producing the tones that are used for contrasting the lexical meanings of syllables; they do not function as intonation patterns to distinguish the syntactical meanings of sentences. However, when the tones combine with each other, the contour of each tone can be more or less changed but the basic pitch (high or low) is still maintained.
Note that, there are certain pitch differences between an narrative and an interrogative sentence: generally speaking, tones in an interrogative sentence are pronounced at a higher pitch level than tones in an narrative one; similarly, the sounds in imperative sentences are also pronounced higher than the sounds in exclamatory sentences.
